There is the tendency to always want to write like your favorite author when you first begin to write. After all, you want to be like them someday. It takes a while to realize that though you enjoy writing in a similar genre as your favorite author, you’re not exactly the same in style. That’s because every writer has a different voice and you’re already growing in yours.
This could be a scary process.
You can’t help but wonder if your style will be accepted by agents, publishers or the mass. It troubles you that you might not be as good as your heroes. And you can’t stand the idea of not being a successful writer someday. Yet, it scares you to let your writing out to the world.
So what do you do?
Trust your writer instinct. If you must move forward.
It’s that simple (not easy). Pick up your pen (or place your hands on the computer) and unburden your heart of what it nudges you to write. Don’t be afraid. Trust that your talent is amply able to supply you with the right thing to write about.
It is true that some kinds of writing are rejected by agents, acquisition editors and publishers. But they do that for one reason only—when they believe they can’t sell a book and make profit. This is regardless of how good a book may be.
Let me put this in other words.
They don’t know how to sell it. Period. And they fear that if they attempt to do so, they may not make a profit—it’s a risk they’re not willing to take. You must remember that publishers are the business side of writing. And like every other business, their goal is to make profit.
But that doesn’t mean that your work isn’t saleable.
That they don’t know how to sell it doesn’t mean there isn’t a possible way to do so. Publishers depend on a developed market, or one that they believe they can develop. When they receive a book they don’t have a market for, they reject it. But you can device a remarkable plan unique to you that will lead to the success of your book. More and more authors—fiction and non-fiction—have proved this and it gets easier every day.
They devised a plan unique to them. They asked for help and ideas from family, friends and colleagues. Some went as far as training in a marketing course. And slowly, their book became a success.
I can assure you of something. For every person that won’t like your book, there will be a few more that will. That publishers haven’t created a market for your line of work doesn’t mean that line doesn’t exist. You find that more and more people enjoy more than one genre. So you wrote a cross-genre book that has no defined category. Trust me, there are people looking for a blend of their favorite genres. So go ahead and be bold and announce your book even though it’s a unique kind of fiction. Go ahead and believe that your idea will be a brilliant addition on the shelves of other successful non-fiction. You’ll be shocked to discover people looking for just the kind of solution you recommend.
Many rejected authors have had fantastic breakthroughs. You just might be one of them if you give it your best shot.
