We all agree that technology has made our lives a lot easier. But also, faster.
Between giving the best of your day’s hours to your day job and running house errands, it seems almost impossible to give adequate time to your writing. Add social media and blogging to the mix and you definitely have your arms full.
Everything these days has to be timely and on schedule and even that by itself is a chore.
The fast moving world however, waits for no one. You have to get your speed up or be left behind. Juggling everything and making it work is not an option. It’s a must. You have to achieve your dream and live out your destiny despite the fact that you only have 24 hours a day and your daily activities can’t be trimmed any slimmer.
It’s no secret that a smart phone helps in a lot of ways, but how is it functional for a writer?
Here are my views:
- It allows you download every app important to you as a writer. Let’s face it. Time allocated to your WCT (Writer Computer Time) is never really enough. That is, if you’re the type who has a full daily schedule. And if you don’t work from home, it’s even worse. But with a phone that lets you carry every app important to you as a writer, you just might be able to get half your work done before or after WCT. I have an android, and with googleplay, I’ve been able to download every app important to me from wordpress to pinterest. I’m a writer, blogger, book reviewer/beta reader. There is no way I’d be able to accomplish all that efficiently if I depended solely on WCT. It’s simply not possible. Unless of course I want to spend twenty hours of the day on the computer. Here is a list of some of my apps that are useful to me as a writer: WordPress, Quick Office, Adobe Tradebit, Amazon Kindle, Voice Dictionary/Thesaurus, Goodreads, Pinterest and other social media apps. With these, I can carry my books and blog with me wherever I go.
- Makes You An Efficient Multitasker. The problem with WCT is that once you’re in front of the computer, you’ll have to stay there uninterrupted if you’ll accomplish much. Any writer would tell you that divided attention is the last thing you need. It is almost impossible to multitask with your WCT as one of the tasks on your list. But with a smart phone, not so. You could be waiting in line at the grocery store or at the mall, or even at the dentist’s. That extra ten minutes where you would lock your arms over your chest and scowl, you could actually use it to take care of your emails, blog comments, social media and read blog posts by other writers, taking the load off your WCT. Some writers choose the old fashioned way by carrying a notepad and a pen to get some writing done. But with the recent changes in the industry, you can’t afford to do just that. Especially if you’re trying to break in. With my notifications turned on, no matter where I am I can almost always respond as I please. I pick and choose what I respond to using Michael Hyatt’s scale of Urgency/Importance. At the end of the day, I could get a lot of my daily activities done while taking care of my writer business all at the same time.
- Lessens The Work On Your WCT. A typical WCT on the computer is spent writing/editing your book, writing/responding to emails, social media and reading blog posts by other writers/bloggers. It is just as #2 says; carrying your work and blog with you takes the load off. If you’re able to deal with 50-75% of your emails, social media and post reads outside your WCT, all the better for you.
- It Is A Great Defense Against The Law of Murphy. Have you ever had everything go wrong on a day that it shouldn’t? That’s the Law of Murphy at work against you. I’ve had such and it wasn’t funny. According to a blog tour roster, I was supposed to release a post on a certain day. Days and weeks before that day were cramped so I only had enough time to read and write my review of the book on paper a day before the posting (I prefer writing my reviews on paper before typing it up into my computer). I planned to wake early the next morning, have it typed and then release the post. Unfortunately, the Law of Murphy chose to strike that day. For some reason, the power went out and my laptop was out of battery. I had activities lined up for the day that could not be ignored and so running off to town to a public café was out of the question. I didn’t plan on spending more than a few minutes on this; going to town would take so much more time. It would have been a total disaster if I didn’t have my phone with me. With QuickOffice, the android equivalent of Microsoft Office, I prepared my post. I already had the book cover and author pictures in my phone so all I needed to do was some copying and pasting, and voila! I was done. It would interest you to know that the power issue was fixed at the end of the day, close to nightfall. What in the world would I have done if I didn’t have my phone?
- It helps You Become A More Disciplined Writer. Ask around, most writers would tell you that their greatest distraction from writing is the internet. If your WCT is split between writing/editing your book, responding to emails/social media, replying to comments on your blog and reading other blog posts, it takes a lot of discipline to accomplish any writing. Because one click on a link, and you’re done. You may have intended to check for just one email, but you’ll end up going the whole nine yards. Some writers have been able to overcome this temptation by sticking to a strict rule: No internet until writing is done. But if you already decided that WCT is strictly writing, blogging and maybe some post reads, you could accomplish more writing. Part of the reason I’m able to keep off the internet in my writing time is because I know I’ll take care of everything else later on my phone as the day goes.
So there you have it. My views on how a smart phone makes a writer’s life much easier.
