Book Review ~ Something Needs to Change: A Call to Make Your Life Count in a World of Urgent Need By David Platt

About the Book

USA TODAYPUBLISHERS WEEKLY, AND ECPA BESTSELLER – The author of Radical takes readers on a soul-searching journey through impoverished villages in the Himalayan mountains, daring them to make a difference in a world of urgent need, starting right where they live.

“Grippingly vulnerable and unforgettable. I could not put this book down.”–Ann Voskamp, author of One Thousand Gifts

While leading a team on a week-long trek of the Himalayas, bestselling author and pastor David Platt was stunned by the human needs he encountered, an experience so dramatic that it “changed the trajectory of my life.” Meeting a man who’d lost his eye from a simple infection and seeing the faces of girls stolen from their families and trafficked in the cities, along with other unforgettable encounters, opened his eyes to the people behind the statistics and compelled him to wrestle with his assumptions about faith. In Something Needs to Change, Platt invites readers to come along on both the adventure of the trek, as well as the adventure of seeking answers to tough questions like, “Where is God in the middle of suffering?” “What makes my religion any better than someone else’s religion?” and “What do I believe about eternal suffering?” Platt has crafted an irresistible message about what it means to give your life for the gospel–to finally stop talking about faith and truly start living it.

Review

Something Needs to Change chronicles the journey of Pastor David Platt to the Himalayas and the lessons he learned about a world outside anything he’d ever witnessed. With each stop, visit, and conversation, David encounters shocking revelations that make him question some matters of faith; he discovers deep needs that are both physical and spiritual, but ultimately his experience leads him to reaffirm his faith that God is love and still in control, and to appreciate the truth on a practical level that Christianity practiced with comfort at its core isn’t the kind that can carry the gospel to the ends of the earth, especially to places where it’s never been heard. With much prayer and layer upon layer of conviction from Scriptural meditation, David reassesses his system of belief, a kind he’s also witnessed in many others, and realizes that for God’s heart to be fulfilled here on earth, Something Needs to Change about today’s culture of modern Christianity. This book is a call to ALL who aim to fulfill the Father’s heart and Jesus’ Great Commission, to step up, trust God and take action as the Holy Spirit leads.

*Though I offer this review to the public, it is my opinion and simply that. Much appreciation to Waterbrook Multnomah for a free copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

**As editor of TBAP, I honestly couldn’t think of a better article, review or interview than this one, to publish on Christmas day. This book highlights the reason Jesus was born—to save a dying and despairing world from the worst kind of darkness amd death. If you want a glimpse of what God saw when He looked down on us and sent Jesus, because of mercy and compassion, pick up Platt’s book and you’ll receive fresh revelation beyond what you imagined. Read this book slowly, perhaps section by section or chapter by chapter. Trust what God whispers into your heart and spirit as you follow Platt’s journey through the Himalayas, and don’t be afraid to take action as the Holy Spirit leads. Greatness isn’t found in fame and wealth. Greatness is found in serving others. If you want to be great, you love and serve people (Matthew 20:25-28; 23:11-12; Mark 10:42-45), especially those who can’t pay you back (Luke 14:12-14).

On behalf of TBAP and from the depths of my heart, I pray you have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
