Album Review ~ Hiding Place By Tori Kelly

Category Religious/Christian Genre Gospel R&B/Pop/Soul Release Date September 14, 2018. Rating 5 Stars Review Tori Kelly’s Hiding Place is rich with soul, vulnerability and truth. Her heart, lyrics and voice touch to the deepest parts, whether she’s hitting the highest notes or riding the lowest pitches. Clearly intentional and delicate about her theme, it is obvious Kelly aimed to inspire faith, hope, and love for the darkest of times with her story, as she boldly tells about the goodness and faithfulness of God in leading her through her toughest times and supplying her joy, strength, and love for God, herself, and others when she needed it the most. Kelly may have aimed to bless and inspire, but it’s simply impossible not to be entertained by Hiding Place, as each unique song touches on something that resonates on a personal level with most living souls. *Though I offer this review to the public, it is my opinion and simply that. My gratitude to Propeller Consulting, LLC for a free CD copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

The Purpose of Music & Songwriting

Music is a language for all souls. It is a gift from God that helps us praise, worship and thank Him in a uniquely magnificent and joyous manner, as well as express who we are, our content, personal beliefs, and life experiences and lessons. No other form of utterance lifts up the soul, causes the spirit to rejoice, and moves the body joyfully all at the same time. Music has two parts—melody and lyrics. Instrumentals are tuned according to the melody. However, the more vital of the two is the lyrics. No matter how amazing a melody is, if its lyrics are offensive, the [offended group in the] audience won’t accept the song despite all of the work put into the music, no matter how awesome the output. This makes songwriting an important point of focus in the music-making process. For the Church, five purposes stand out: Primarily to tell the Truth rather than impress, which is the other way around in mainstream. It is in realizing this that we’re able to praise/worship/thank God through …

Album Review ~ Control (Vol. 1) By Joel Vaughn

Category Religious/Christian/Inspirational Genre Pop Release Date July 27, 2018. Rating 4.5 Stars Review Timely. Deep. Sincere…are just a few words to describe Joel Vaughn’s remarkable forthcoming release, Control Vol. 1. The maturity with which Vaughn speaks his truth is inspirationally amiable and garners respect. It takes growth and humility to confess one’s truth and messy experiences in such a way that in the end, it highlights peace, gratitude, hope, and joy…and, yeah, it’s no wonder Vaughn chooses to close the album with a number titled Joy. Every song is clearly prayerfully written, packed with powerful candor, and track arranged in a manner to speak a message of life, peace, hope, and rest that can be found only in Jesus. In the midst of this awesomeness that chronicles a peculiar season where God pulls down pride, false humility and lovingly builds this individual with the perseverance that fosters character, and adds the peace, rest, and joy that comes only from genuine faith brought forth from drilling trials, please pay attention to track #4, Back Where I …

Artist Scoop ~ Interview With Music Group, God’s Chosen

God’s Chosen is a special group of charming ladies that love God and are clearly passionately about His work on earth, particularly in the ministry of music/singing. The passion in their voices—individually and collectively—is contagious, entertaining and courageous! They released their wonderful album, self-titled (read the TBAP review here) today, and in celebration of that, took the time to chat a bit with TBAP, letting the world have a little peek into their lives. Take a look! Miranda ~ Hello! So good to have you on TBAP! Please tell us a bit about God’s Chosen. Also, how did you choose the name for your group? GC: God’s Chosen consists of three ladies (Keisha, Sarah, and Zebrina). We are women who are deeply in love with God, committed to ministry, and die-hard fans of Gospel and Christian music. The name came about quite haphazardly. It was the …

Album Review ~ Sweetness & Sorrow By Jonny Diaz

Category Religious/Christian Genre Rock Release Date June 8, 2018. Rating 4.5 Stars Review A baring of the soul, the truth of the gospel, a love song, an encouragement to a brother/sister—all these are entwined in the album’s whole to produce a revealing cascade of what Christian living is all about. The thoughtful lyrics are clearly born from a place of soulful depth and is inescapably thought-provoking, so that you nod your head in acknowledgment of its truth as you meditate and enjoy the overall high quality music. There couldn’t have been better words than “Sweetness” and “Sorrow” to merge together to describe the essence of this album—not that it denotes any form of tragedy, but that in the realness of life, though the two are mingled together, with Jesus in the center of it all, the overall outcome is blessed faith, increased love, and greater hope. You can’t miss these three in the music of Sweetness & Sorrow.
